ICE FISHING PLAN

BACKSTORY

We have the privilege of living on the shore of Lake Winnipeg, the 11th largest fresh water lake in the world. In the winter, the lake becomes spotted with ice fishing shacks. Aside from doing a bit of fishing myself, I, of course, wander out on the ice and check out how the experts do it.

You know... researching material for new songs...

There seriously has been an internet set up called “ice fishing shack” that shows up in early winter. The ice fishers tend to be great/friendly people. Last winter one group even invited me to share fresh pickerel they were frying up on a camp stove out on the ice.

Verse 1:

     A                                                               D

So come November when its a little less warm

A                                               E                 A

CBC starts talkin about that first winter storm.

    A                                                                  D

It gets us all excited as we’re tapping that keg

            A                                        E

There’ll soon be ice... on... Lake Winnipeg.

Verse 2:

So Tiny and I and my good buddy Dave

gather for some planning in my cool man cave.

Sitting in a circle on 5 gallon pails

Guzzling beer and telling fishing tales.

Chorus:

           D                      D                          A

Some time in late October, they start tugging

             F#m

at your leg

                     A                F#m           E

thoughts of ice fishing season on Lake

Winnipeg.

Verse 3:

So its off to Cabelas to update our gear

but those new pop-up fishing tents are a little to dear

They’re light, warm and set up fast but burdened with reason

our heavy wooden shack gonna have to do one more season

We checked out them new fancy things but

A                Bm   Cm  A

kept them from our minds

            D                                                  A

there’ll be no pop up fishing tents, no battery

                F#m

powered augers,

     B       C#m        Dm  B7         E                F#m

no solar powered internet, lets leave that for

      Gm             E7

the bloggers...

      D                                                     A

We turn our pockets in side out but that’s just

               F#m

where it ends

          A                             F#m

we’re leaving that stuff again to our rich

American friends.

Verse 5:

So we bid fare well to the loves of our lives

We head up 59 with our load of supplies.

betting with each other - will there be enough ice?...

The smell the pickerel frying - woo- hoo! Gonna be nice!
